Generally speaking, I have a sunny disposition. Now, when I am arguing with my computer or I have just been looking at a computer for too long, I have noticed I start to get quite frustrated and I want to throw said computer and then jump up and down on it (Watch the Office Space copy machine scene for the full depiction). Other signs that I am not mentally in a tip-top place include getting angry at other inanimate objects (looking at you IPOD), feeling like I have had 10 cups of coffee when I haven’t had any in months, and I feel like I need a hug from my dog (to his credit, he is a great hugger).
So, what gets me out of this funk? Moving my body! Exercise! For me, I have 2 main ways that I enjoy exercising and releasing energy. If I am really amped up (that caffeinated feeling), it is time to run, run, run. If I need to move outside of my head and circulate my energy in a more flowy ( I made that word up) way, I dance.
When you notice these same signs, consider moving out of it with some motion- it can be a walk, hike, dance, yoga, running, biking, swimming, gardening, lifting weights- anything- as long as the end result is you feeling happier mentally, emotionally, and physically.
We all get into our food ruts, and this is where some external input is really helpful. A recipe exchange is a really simple way to get some food inspiration just by sending a few emails. Now, this is not to say you can’t do a recipe exchange in person and have it be more of an event, but for some simple recipe sharing, try this way on for size.
Below is an email that you can send out to your friends and family to get a recipe exchange going. Please feel free to copy and paste it and send it off!
You have been invited to be a part of a recipe exchange. Please send a recipe to the person whose name is in position 1 (even if you don’t know them) and it should be something quick, easy and without rare ingredients. Actually, the best one is the one you know in your head and can type right now. Don’t agonize over it; it is the one that you make when you are short on time.
Follow these instructions!
After you’ve sent your recipe to the person in position 1 below, and only to that person, copy this email into a new email, move my name to the top and put your name in position 2. Only mine and your name should show when you send your email. Send to 20 friends BCC (blind copy) If you cannot do this within 5 days, let me know, so it will be fair to those participating. You should receive 36 recipes. It’s fun to see where they come from. Seldom does anyone drop out because we all need new ideas.
The turnaround is fast, as there are only 2 names on the list, and you only have to do this once.
I am thankfully in the Yahoo group Boulder Urban Farm Girls and Home Makers, and one of the cool creations of the group is a seed trade/seed start/garden planning meeting.
Seed trading is just like what it sounds like- people bringing leftover seeds from the year before that they purchased or even better, that they saved from their plants last season. This is a great free way to get seeds and increase the diversity of the plants in your garden.
To organize a seed trade, gather up fellow garden enthusiasts and pick a time to meet.
Everyone should bring the following to the trade:
- seeds 🙂
- seeds trays
- potting soil (can already be in the seed trays for ease)
- popsicle sticks and a marker or however you wish to note what seeds went where (masking tape on the side of the seed tray can also work)
- plastic bags/small jars for any seeds you do not wish to plan instantly
Everyone can place seeds in areas by type, each person can announce what they brought, or every person can just walk about and see what they may exchange.
